Drones over 250g – great flying fun for hobby pilots

Thanks to modern drones, almost any ambitious hobby pilot can now experience the unique feeling of flying. Special conditions apply to drones weighing over 250g.

Legal regulations for drones

Since 2019, uniform regulations governing the operation of drones have been in force across the EU. These were also transposed into national law in Germany in 2021. However, there is no single "drone law".

Rather, the regulations in the Air Traffic Act, the Air Traffic Licensing Ordinance, the Air Traffic Regulations, and the Air Administration's Cost Ordinance were amended and supplemented. In accordance with applicable EU law, drones have since been classified into three different categories based on weight, purpose, and operating location.

What must be considered when using drones weighing over 250g?

The open category includes drones that pose the lowest risk. The conditions for operating a drone depend on the technically defined class it falls into. Weight plays a crucial role, among other factors.

A drone with a takeoff weight exceeding 250 grams may only be flown if you register as a pilot with the Federal Aviation Office. To be allowed to fly a drone over 250g, you will receive an electronic pilot ID after successful registration. This ID must be affixed to the drone itself so that it can be uniquely identified and assigned.

The same applies to drones weighing less than 250g that are equipped with a camera. Since January 1, 2022, drones weighing over 250g also require EU certification of pilot competence. This involves passing a special online test consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions. In addition, specific drone liability insurance is required.

What you should pay attention to when buying a drone over 250g

Besides the legal requirements for flying your drone over 250g, it's crucial that it also meets your needs and expectations. Therefore, you should pay particular attention to the features of your drone over 250g when buying one. The more features your drone over 250g has, the heavier it will be. Some of the most popular features include:

  • A wide range of flight functions for individual flight maneuvers.
  • A high-resolution camera
  • GPS sensors
  • A high battery capacity
  • Automatic flight modes such as a return-to-home function in case of low battery or weak signal.

Unlike drones under 250g, slightly heavier models also offer many additional features, such as:

  • Obstacle sensors for automatic collision avoidance
  • Follow-Me mode
  • ActiveTrack and FocusTrack.

Advantages and disadvantages of a drone over 250g

A drone weighing over 250g is somewhat heavier than a mini- drone with a takeoff weight of under 250g, but they are generally better equipped and therefore offer more features. Of course, you must comply with the somewhat stricter legal regulations when flying them.

Unlike very lightweight drones, a drone weighing over 250g offers more space for a larger battery, which usually accounts for the majority of a drone's weight. Furthermore, a drone over 250g is generally more stable in the air and less susceptible to crosswinds. Additional drone accessories can also be more easily attached if weight isn't a major concern. This makes it even more versatile and offers a wider range of applications.

For whom is a drone weighing over 250g worthwhile?

While particularly lightweight drones are primarily suitable for beginners , drones weighing over 250g usually offer significantly more features. This often makes them interesting for advanced or professional users as well. In this weight class, you often don't have to choose between camera drones and GPS drones . A drone over 250g usually offers both functions in one device.

A drone weighing over 250g is therefore particularly suitable if you place special value on features and thus a wide range of functions. If you travel a lot, however, you should probably opt for a lighter drone that is easier to transport. Besides registering as a pilot of a drone over 250g, you must always observe regional regulations, such as no-fly zones, regardless of where you are.
